Mange såkalte ‘full-range’ høyttalere kan ikke reprodusere de lave bassfrekvensene som finnes på de fleste musikk- og filmplater. Disse frekvensene er nødvendige for nøyaktig gjengivelse av originalopptaket for å gi den naturlige atmosfæren til et virkelig opptak. Når den er tilstede, blir den umiddelbart gjenkjennelig av lytterne som å være nærmere ‘den faktiske forestillingen’. Selvfølgelig har DVD-filmer en dedikert basskanal for basseffekter, disse er akkurat som beskrevet, «spesialeffekter» for å være presise LFE (lavfrekvente effekter). LFE bør ikke forveksles med bassfrekvensene som er tilstede i et normalt lydsignal i full rekkevidde som blir presentert for de viktigste fullrange høyttalerne. Et riktig utformet sub-bass-system vil ikke bare gjengi disse bassfrekvensene med nøyaktighet, men det vil også øke utgangen av konvensjonell stereomusikk med veldig lavfrekvent bass som kjennes fremfor å bli hørt. Resultatet er større lydfiler i nedre og mellombånd. Et system med bredere båndbredde vil alltid høres mer realistisk ut og til slutt mer underholdende, stimulerende og engasjerende.
